What IS Pecha Kucha Night?
Pecha Kucha Night was designed by designers Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham in 2003 as a place for (you guessed it) designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Pecha Kucha is now happening in 143 locations globally. The SDAF is pleased to have been selected as San Diego's official chapter of PKN.
Pecha Kucha is derived from a Japanese term meaning the sound of conversation, or chit-chat. Pecha Kucha Nights are creative, social and informal. The concept is simple: each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds, giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of floor time and expression before the next presenter is up.
Then there’s the 20 "rules". One of our favorites? Pecha Kucha Night is about thinking and drinking. It all makes for stimulating, scintillating, succinct and often striking presentations from design, architecture, photography, art and other creative fields.
Presentations begin at 20:20. Surprised?
Who presents at Pecha Kucha Nights?
The PKN floor is open to anyone who has something to share and a desire to do so within the 20x20 format. The SDAF will often (but not always) offer a theme for any given date to provide direction, and when we do even a whiff of the evening's inspiration is acceptable - but not required. Unacceptable: sales presentations and porno - but almost everything else, from sharing a work in progress to something from 1000 years ago that has left an indelible imprint, is.
How can I participate?
If you have a desire to support the organizing committee, or any other interests in or questions about Pecha Kucha Night, please send an email to PKN@SDArchitecture.org, and we'll get back to you soon.
If you have a 20x20 presentation up your sleeve, first review the presentation guidelines. Then, let us know of your interest by sending an email to PKN@sdarchitecture.org. Please include the following information:
- Name, profession and telephone number
- 2-5 images ONLY of your work (saved as a .jpg, and each image a maximum of 1024x768)
- Some biographical information, and what you'd like to present.
We will reply to your email soon. All selected presenters will need to have their images submitted to us one week before each Pecha Kucha Night.
The goal of PKN and the SDAF in this effort is to stimulate thought, awareness and inspiration through the many forms that art and design take. As such, Pecha Kucha Night San Diego will be curated to encourage diversity, i.e. if you're an architect, designer, artist, writer, or creative in some other way that we may not have mentioned here, we want to hear from you!

Our little disclaimer: Please know that all the presentations are subject to review by the PKN committee. Thanks so much for your interest – we look forward to your participation!
